Happy 17th Sushi party!
Well, today was one for the books! We started out at Dallas Life getting our last YMSL service hours in ... and then had to rush home to the Sushi Man showing up at 5:30... but... he was late
VERY LATE and we had some hungry boys!
Randy was an hour late. NO text, no call... and it was frustrating. He walked in, preparing an hour late, smiling and kind but nothing. Holt and I were both confused and I was definitely more visibly frustrated (thankfully I was still nice). After an hour of the boys sitting in chairs starving they got food. I felt better. They were patient. Holt and I did our best to watch football and ignore but they destroyed that food in five minutes, and were then back to waiting.
Anyway, he made sushi for 2 hours and it was amazing. At the end we had to tell him to stop making food, it was too much. I started cleaning up and he stopped me and said "that's my job" and I said "no sir... your job was sushi, I'm going to help you!" After cleaning and chatting and a language barrier at times... I asked him how he would like to be paid. Holt had said not to tip him (earlier) but then we both just agreed to top him regardless. He reminded me that he had his sister's phone and I could pay him and he would get it on his phone later. I asked if he dropped it...
He proceeded to tell us that at 2:09am, a drunk driver slammed he, his sister and his brother in law from behind. He should be dead. DEAD. We saw videos and his car. He was in the back seat and the force shot his phone through the window. He had to go to the hospital and get checked out. HOURS later he probably went home to get some sleep. He woke up and drove from Arlington (where his sister lives) back to Rockwall for fresh meat that he prefers for sushi and all the way back to my house.
We were packing up his car, talking about all of it and I didn't know what to do other than to hug him. I felt ashamed for being annoyed (even though I know it was ok that I was annoyed) but felt sad. Felt proud of him for showing up. I told the boys... and Jackson was right...we should always assume best intentions! God bless you Randy. He said GOD SAVED MY FAMILY. Cool way to hear about someone's faith in a shocking story. He knew it wasn't good luck... He was spared. Thank you Lord!!
